Super-charging Bug Bounty Hunting with the Power of AI
For those on the cutting edge of bug bounty hunting, AI is proving to be a powerful sidekick. By automating tedious tasks like scanning for vulnerabilities, analyzing large codebases, and even generating exploit scripts, AI allows hunters to focus on high-level strategy and creative problem-solving.
Let's explore how AI can assist at every stage of bug bounty hunting.
Reconnaissance
The goal of the reconnaissance phase is to uncover as much attack surface as possible within the scope. One such way we can do this is by brute-forcing subdomains or web directories. With an LLM we can create targeted custom wordlists, giving us an opportunity to find something others won't. LLMs allow you to be superhuman by being faster in executing your methodology.
We will start with a website like tesla.com, for which the bug bounty program contains a wildcard domain (*.tesla.com). Using a combination of LLM, PureDNS, and ChatGPT, we can try to find some unique subdomains.
In ChatGPT, we provide the following prompt:
"Create a subdomain enumeration list for Tesla. Identify Tesla's DevOp stack, location, and environments. Consider them all when creating the list. Avoid common subdomains that would exist in other security wordlists. Make the list 1000 lines long. Remove duplicates. Make the list easy to copy and provide only the subdomain names, not the full domain. Do not number the list."
Instead of copying and pasting the responses over to our text files we can instead use SimonW's tool called "LLM" to keep everything within the terminal and write the output directly into a file.
LLM
Basic usage: llm [OPTIONS] [PROMPT]
The tool LLM is a command line application that brings ChatGPT into your terminal. We can pipe the outputs directly into files instead of copying them from your browser. You can install LLM using pip by running the following command:

The command to run LLM is llm. The basic interaction is typing llm with optional arguments such as -m which gives you the option to change the model. After any arguments, provide the prompt just as you would using the web interface.
When you run the llm keys set openai command, it will prompt you to enter an OpenAI key, which you can find at the following link. Please be aware of the costs associated with OpenAI, alternatively you can install Mistral 7B, a locally run LLM.

We can take our prompt from earlier, use it with LLM, and pipe the results into a text file for PureDNS to run. Additional text in the response won’t interfere with pureDNS.

Once we use a combination of AI and traditional methods to create a list of subdomains, we end up with a list of potential web servers. Instead of going through the list manually, we can use a tool by Bishop Fox called Eyeballer to do the testing for us.
Eyeballer
Basic usage: python3 eyeballer.py --weights <model file> predict <folder location>
Eyeballer screenshots the HTTP response of every host, then uses AI to analyze the results of each screenshot and sorts them into categories based on appearance. These categories include: old-looking pages, login pages, pages that receive a 404 response, and web applications to name a few. To download and install the latest pre-trained model (v3) from the project's releases:

To use Eyeballer, we include the parameter of the pre-trained model and the folder with our screenshots.

Eyeballer outputs two files when it finishes running:
- A CSV file that contains the filenames and a confidence rating for each category.
- An HTML file that visually shows all the screenshots with the ability to filter by category as shown below.
Vulnerability Identification
Now that we have a list of potential targets, we can start identifying vulnerabilities.
One tool that has been around for several years is ffuf. Many hackers use it to fuzz for vulnerabilities like Insecure Direct Object References (IDOR), Cross-Site Scripting (XSS), and Application Programming Interface (API) flaws. The ffufai tool has integrated AI to provide extra features while maintaining the same syntax.

Basic usage: python3 ffufai.py -u <URL> -w <wordlist file>
By leveraging OpenAI or Claude AI, ffufai suggests file paths and extensions that could be worth testing for in your target application. To download and install ffufai, use pip and supply your OpenAI key:

Let's say we found an endpoint on the Tesla program and want to identify other valid endpoints. After installing ffufai, it will suggest endpoints we can use and add them automatically.

Nuclei AI extension
Chrome Extension
Nuclei AI is a Chrome browser extension that can generate a Nuclei template by highlighting a proof of concept and right-clicking. As of this writing, the Nuclei AI extension cannot be automatically installed on Chrome; it must be done manually:
- Download the zipped version of the project here
- Unzip the file
- In Chrome, go to chrome://extensions
- Enable the 'Developer mode' toggle located in the top right corner of the page.
- Click on 'Load unpacked' and select the unzipped extension folder.
After we install the extension, we can either go to any site to generate a template or visit HackerOne to generate a template from a disclosed report. Going to any HackerOne report will now show a button to generate a template, as shown below:
Shift
Shift is a highly anticipated plugin for Caido bringing AI assistance to an already powerful tool. If you aren't familiar with Caido, it's a wonderful alternative to Burp Suite that is worth checking out. With Shift, you can use AI to take JavaScript and generate the corresponding request directly in Caido. Other features include the following:
- Generate match and replace rules
- Create tailored wordlists that are content-aware to a target application.
- AI assisted formatting and editing for requests as well as payload generation.
Exploitation
Many LLMs will prevent you from asking direct questions about exploitation payloads. We have two options to overcome these limitations. The first being uncensored chatbots that assist with exploitation; these include:
- Nous Hermes - Open-source LLM developed by Nous Research.
- White Rabbit Neo - An open-source LLM for offensive and defensive cybersecurity.
- The New Dolphin 3.0 - Locally run uncensored LLM excels in coding, conversation, and agentic tasks.
Our other option is to jailbreak an LLM to trick it into answering your questions. New jailbreaks are always coming out, we will be using one for Claude.
Generating exploits with jailbroken LLMs
Using the previously mentioned tool, llm can create templates that will jailbreak Claude or other models, and obtain answers that the chatbot would normally restrict. Create a template named “jbclaude”:

We need to install the Claude model as well as save the text file as a template in llm:

Now using the -t flag we can use the template before any prompt to jailbreak Claude and get the output that the chatbot would normally block.

Instead of creating payload list we can also have llm write code for us such as a PHP backdoor which creates a reverse shell to a specific IP and port:

Report Writing
The report is just as important as the exploitation process as it is your chance to prove impact. You want to be sure it is well-written, informative, and conveys the importance of the severity of the issue. While any chatbot may produce an acceptable report, specialized GPTs exist for this purpose, one of which is "Bounty Plz".
Bounty Plz
Bounty Plz is a GPT created by Jason Haddix for writing security reports. It aims to answer common questions that are critical to a quality report. For example, it will give a CVSS score for a vulnerability, provide a basic disclosure structure, and recommend a fix for an issue.
You can find this GPT by selecting "Explore GPTs" on the top left side panel of the ChatGPT web application and searching for "Bounty Plz." Searching for "Jason Haddix" will also return many other useful GPTs that he has created. You can access Bounty Plz by clicking the link provided below.

Once you find a vulnerability, you can provide Bounty Plz with a prompt like the following:
Generate a detailed bug bounty report using Markdown with the following information: Host: Lampysecurity.com Finding: IDOR on User Profile page Endpoint: user.lampysecurity.com/profile/14939. Provide the Title, VRT, CVSS, Description, Impact, a general remediation stragegy.
As shown below, ChatGPT provides a detailed response that includes all the necessary information. Be sure to review the content before submitting, as all LLMs sometimes hallucinate.
Conclusion
AI isn't replacing bug bounty hunters, but it is definitely making their lives easier. By enhancing productivity and creativity, AI is making humans more effective at finding (and remediating) vulnerabilities. Focus on the high-value tasks and automate away the repetitive, menial ones.
